Major Road and Transit Disruptions

Residents and commuters are advised of significant roadwork and transit changes scheduled for Thursday, 19 March 2026. A primary closure is in effect at Browns Road in Kingston as part of ongoing construction Phase 1. This closure, which runs until 29 March, impacts several major Metro Tasmania bus routes, including services 407, 408, 409, 410, 411, 412, 413, 415, 416, 417, and 500. Additionally, school services 248, 250, 274, 280, and 298 are affected. Passengers should utilize the alternative stop at Kingston Interchange, Channel Highway (Stop B) during this period.

  • Glebe: Edward Street, between Brooker Avenue and Short Street, remains closed from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm for road works. This project is scheduled to conclude on Friday, 20 March.
  • CBD Night Works: Ongoing intersection upgrades continue at the corner of Liverpool Street and Murray Street. Motorists should expect delays and diversions between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am. These works are part of the permanent implementation of scramble crossings to improve pedestrian safety.
  • Queens Domain: Temporary restrictions are in place on McVilly Drive between Davies Avenue and the Tasman Highway interchange.

CBD Streetscape Improvements

Installation of the second stage of the Collins Street Streetscape Improvement Trial is now underway. This project aims to transform Collins Street into a more accessible and comfortable environment for pedestrians and cyclists. The current phase includes the placement of temporary infrastructure and greenery designed to enhance the street's appeal for local workers and shoppers. While through-traffic remains open, the City of Hobart requests that motorists exercise caution and observe all temporary signage and speed reductions in the trial zone.

Public Health Advisories

Tasmanian Health Services have released updated resources for the 2026 Respiratory Infection Immunisation Program. This initiative focuses on managing influenza and acute respiratory risks across the Hobart region. Furthermore, health providers are now utilizing the new RSV Maternal and Infant Protection Program toolkit, which provides clinical guidance for the state-wide immunisation rollout. Families with infants are encouraged to consult their local general practitioner regarding the availability of these programs.

Planning and Public Comment

The Hobart City Council Planning Authority Committee reminds the public that representations for several currently advertised development applications must be submitted by 11:59 pm on Wednesday, 25 March 2026. Notable applications include proposed alterations and new fencing at 6 Washington Street in South Hobart. Detailed plans can be viewed at the Hobart Council Centre on Elizabeth Street or via the municipal planning portal. Any person may make a representation in writing to the Chief Executive Officer or via the official council email channel.

Fire Safety Notice

The Tasmania Fire Service has issued a Moderate fire danger rating for the South East district, including the greater Hobart area. While no total fire bans are currently in place for 19 March, residents are reminded to register any planned burns and remain vigilant. Property owners are encouraged to review their bushfire survival plans as the summer season tail-ends.
