Hobart Traffic and Commute Update: Friday, 3 April 2026

Good morning, Hobart commuters. As we head into the final workday of the week, road conditions across the city are largely stable, though several key infrastructure projects and local roadworks will require your attention during the morning and afternoon peaks. We are seeing typical congestion levels for a Friday, but specific sites in the CBD and northern suburbs may cause minor disruptions.

Central Hobart and CBD Night Works

Commuters entering the city from the north and west should be aware that significant night works at the intersection of Liverpool Street and Murray Street are scheduled to conclude at 6:00 am this morning. While the intersection is expected to be fully reopened for the morning rush, motorists may encounter some residual dampness or minor equipment being cleared. Please exercise caution if you are one of the first through the area following the 6:00 am reopening.

Additionally, McVilly Drive remains closed to all traffic between Davies Avenue and the Tasman Highway interchange. This closure is for the ongoing installation of a sewer main and is expected to remain in place until mid-April. Pedestrians and cyclists using the Queens Domain should follow all posted detours.

New Bridgewater Bridge and Northern Suburbs

While the new bridge is fully operational and providing a much smoother transit across the Derwent than the old structure, the site remains an active work zone. Crews are currently engaged in the complex process of dismantling the old bridge. Motorists may experience minor delays between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm today due to heavy vehicles and trucks entering and exiting the site. Speed restrictions remain in place for the safety of workers near the riverbanks.

In the Glenorchy area, roadworks on Mt Hull Road in Collinsvale are ongoing. Drivers can expect delays and manual traffic management between 7:30 am and 4:30 pm today. Allow an extra five to ten minutes if your route takes you through this section of the northern suburbs.

Southern Outlet and Transit Lane Updates

Traffic flow on the Southern Outlet remains heavy but moving. While the new Transit Lane Connector at the base of the outlet is easing the bottleneck into Davey and Macquarie Streets, be mindful of ongoing rockface protection works near the Olinda Grove ramp. While these works are primarily situated off the main carriage, occasional short-term speed reductions may be implemented during the day to ensure site safety. Public transport users should note that Metro Tasmania services are running to their regular Friday schedules, though minor detours remain for routes usually utilizing the McVilly Drive area.

Driving Tips for Today

  • Check your route before leaving, particularly if traveling from the Huon Valley or northern suburbs.
  • Maintain a safe following distance near the Bridgewater work site to account for turning heavy vehicles.
  • Be aware of pedestrians near the CBD night-work zones as they transition back to normal operations.
