City Officials Gather for Key Workshop Session

The Hobart Workshop Committee is scheduled to meet today, Monday, 16 March 2026, at 4:00 PM in the Lady Osborne Room at the Hobart Town Hall. This session comes at a pivotal time for the city, as several long-planned infrastructure milestones transition from the planning phase to active implementation. While workshop sessions are primarily deliberative and do not involve formal voting, they serve as the critical forum where elected members refine the strategies that guide the city’s major capital works and policy shifts.

Collins Street Transformation Enters Second Stage

Coinciding with today’s meeting, the City of Hobart has officially commenced the second stage of the Collins Street Streetscape Improvement Trial. Starting today, construction crews are beginning works on the stretch between Victoria Street and Murray Street. This stage of the trial is a significant government initiative aimed at improving CBD safety and accessibility. Key features of the project beginning today include:

  • The installation of the CBD’s first platform bus stop, a design intended to allow passengers to step directly onto a raised surface from the bus while maintaining a separate lane for cyclists.
  • New outdoor dining infrastructure and planter boxes to enhance street-level greenery.
  • Significant changes to line markings and signage to prioritize pedestrian movement.

City officials have noted that this two-year trial allows for real-world testing of street designs, with the data gathered during this phase informing future permanent construction decisions.

Major Traffic and Utility Upgrades

In addition to the inner-city improvements, TasWater has announced the temporary closure of McVilly Drive starting today, 16 March. The closure is required to facilitate vegetation clearing and essential construction for the Selfs Point Sewer Transformation Project. This major utility upgrade is now more than 50% complete and represents a significant investment in the city’s long-term environmental and sanitation infrastructure. Access to the Regatta Grounds and surrounding foreshore areas will be restricted for the duration of this phase.

Broadening the Political Landscape

Today’s local activities occur against a backdrop of intensifying state-level political discussions. The Tasmanian Government recently released a position paper regarding residential planning reforms, led by Minister for Housing and Planning Kerry Vincent. These reforms aim to reduce "clock stopping" in the approval process to accelerate home construction across the state. Furthermore, Minister for Primary Industries Gavin Pearce continues to press the Federal Government for finalized funding regarding the Tranche Three Tasmanian Irrigation projects, which remains a high-priority item for the region’s agricultural stakeholders as Parliament continues its 2026 session.
