Post-Easter Commute: What to Expect Today

As Hobart returns to a regular weekday schedule following the Easter long weekend, commuters should be aware of several significant changes to the road network. Today, Tuesday, 7 April 2026, marks the commencement of new infrastructure works on the Southern Outlet, alongside ongoing major projects that continue to reshape our daily travel routes.

New Works Start at Olinda Grove Roundabout

Commuters using the Southern Outlet should allow extra travel time starting this morning. Construction officially begins today on the installation of new traffic signals at the Olinda Grove roundabout. This project aims to manage peak-period congestion for vehicles exiting the Hobart-bound Southern Outlet off-ramp.

  • Working Hours: Crews will be on-site between 9:30 am and 3:00 pm, Monday to Friday, to minimize impact on the heaviest peak flows.
  • Traffic Impact: Expect a reduced speed limit of 40km/h and temporary single-lane closures through the roundabout.
  • Delay Estimate: Department of State Growth officials advise motorists to allow an additional five minutes for their journey through the Mount Nelson area.

Major Closure: Rosny Esplanade

The 24/7 closure of Rosny Esplanade remains in effect between Kellatie Road and Ninda Street. This is part of the ongoing Stage 1 and 2 road reconstruction project scheduled to continue through October 2026. Local detours are in place, and through-traffic is encouraged to utilize the Tasman Highway or Clarence Street to avoid the work zone.

Bridge Updates: Bridgewater and Tasman Bridge

Traffic is flowing well across the New Bridgewater Bridge, which has been operational since mid-2025. However, motorists may experience minor, intermittent delays near the bridge approaches as crews continue the complex task of dismantling the old lift-span structure. Demolition traffic and heavy machinery are active on-site from 7:00 am daily.

On the Tasman Bridge, work continues on the Eastern Shore pathway connections. While all traffic lanes remain open during the day, pedestrians and cyclists should follow directional signage as some path sections are modified to accommodate the safety barrier upgrades.

Metro Tasmania Public Transport Notice

Despite today being Easter Tuesday, Metro Tasmania is operating on a Regular Weekday Timetable. Commuters should note that while buses are running as per the standard schedule, Metro shops and the information hotline remain closed for the final day of the Easter break.

  • Service Alerts: Due to the Rosny Esplanade closure, several stops between Kellatie Road and Ninda Street are currently bypassed.
  • Advice: Use the Metro Tas App to track your bus in real-time and verify any temporary stop locations before heading out.
