Hobart Traffic and Commute Update: Monday, 23 March 2026

Commuters in Hobart should prepare for a mix of evening disruptions and ongoing construction as the working week begins this Monday, 23 March 2026. While the morning peak is expected to remain largely clear on major bridges, several key intersections and arterial routes are undergoing essential maintenance that will impact travel times, particularly for those heading home after dark.

CBD and Intersection Impacts

A significant project begins tonight at the heart of the city. Starting at 6:00 pm today, the intersection of Collins Street and Murray Street will be subject to night works. These works are scheduled to run from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am through the coming week. Motorists should expect lane closures and temporary detours in the area. If you usually traverse the CBD during evening hours, consider using Elizabeth Street or Campbell Street as alternatives to avoid congestion.

Brooker Highway and Northern Corridors

Resurfacing and line marking continue on the Brooker Highway in New Town. Crews are working between Risdon Road and Park Street on the Hobart-bound lanes. While work is restricted to night hours (7:30 pm to 5:30 am), partial lane closures and a reduced speed limit will be in effect. The Department of State Growth advises drivers to allow at least 15 minutes of extra travel time if traveling late this evening.

In the New Town area, roadworks also continue on Queens Walk between Gas Road and Selfs Point Road. These works are active during the day from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, so expect minor delays when accessing the foreshore or nearby industrial zones. Furthermore, McVilly Drive remains closed between Davies Avenue and the Tasman Highway interchange for the installation of a sewer main. This closure is expected to last until the end of the month.

Public Transport and Kingston Alerts

Metro Tasmania has issued a service alert for passengers in the Kingston area. Due to the ongoing closure of the Firthside off-ramp at Browns Road, several bus routes are being diverted. This affects general access services 407, 408, 410, and 500, as well as several school bus routes. Passengers who normally use stops on Browns Road should check for temporary alternative boarding points and allow for slightly longer transit times.

Bridge Conditions

The new Bridgewater Bridge is operating normally; however, motorists should stay alert for heavy vehicles entering and exiting the site as demolition of the old structure continues. On the Tasman Bridge, although traffic lanes remain open, reduced speed limits may be in place near the Eastern Shore connections as pathway upgrades approach their final stages of the current phase.

Commuters are reminded to drive to the conditions and follow the instructions of traffic controllers near all work sites to ensure the safety of road crews and other road users.
