Morning Commute Overview

Commuters in Hobart should prepare for a mix of ongoing roadworks and specific intersection upgrades this Wednesday, 11 March 2026. While the morning peak is expected to flow relatively well on major arteries like the Tasman Highway, several local diversions and night-time projects are currently impacting key routes in New Town, Glebe, and the CBD.

Major Roadworks and Closures

  • CBD Night Works: Motorists should be aware of ongoing night works at the intersection of Liverpool Street and Murray Street. These works run from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am. While the intersection will be open during the day, temporary road surfaces and modified line markings may cause minor morning delays for those entering the city center.
  • New Town Alerts: Queens Walk remains under significant construction between Gas Road and Selfs Point Road. Delays are expected between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm. Commuters heading toward Cornelian Bay are advised to allow extra travel time or seek alternative routes through Risdon Road.
  • Glebe Disruptions: Roadworks continue on Edward Street between Brooker Avenue and Short Street. Traffic management is in place from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. Access to the city via this corridor is restricted to local residents and emergency vehicles at times.

Eastern Shore and Rosny Updates

On the Eastern Shore, the major 24/7 closure of Rosny Esplanade continues. The road is closed in sections between Kellatie Road and Ninda Street to facilitate extensive infrastructure upgrades. This closure is expected to last through April, significantly impacting local traffic flow toward the Rosny Park business district. Motorists are encouraged to use the Tasman Highway and South Arm Highway as primary bypasses.

Public Transport and Metro Tasmania Services

Metro Tasmania has confirmed that services will operate under the current "Temporary Service Adjustment" schedule this Wednesday. While the majority of high-frequency routes remain stable, a selection of less-frequented services has been suspended to ensure overall network reliability. Commuters are advised to check the Metro Tas app for real-time tracking, particularly for routes affected by the Rosny Esplanade closure, as several stops in the area remain temporarily decommissioned.

Regional Road Alerts

For those travelling from the Derwent Valley, Boyer Road east of New Norfolk is currently reduced to a single lane near the Derbyshire Cliffs (Pulpit Rock Lookout). Traffic controllers are on-site between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm. Heavy vehicle operators and regular commuters between New Norfolk and the northern suburbs should expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

Looking Ahead

A reminder for CBD workers: Kemp Street (between Collins Street and the Vibe Hotel) will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, 12 March, for crane operations. If you typically use this area for parking or deliveries, please plan for restricted access from 7:00 am.
