Morning Traffic Overview

Commuters in Hobart should prepare for a mix of scheduled road closures and the tail-end of nightly resurfacing projects this Wednesday, 25 March 2026. While major highways are expected to be clear for the peak morning rush, several key suburban routes and CBD intersections remain under active construction regimes that may influence travel times and bus routes.

Major Arteries and Night Works

The Department of State Growth is currently undertaking significant resurfacing and line-marking operations on the Brooker Highway. This work is concentrated between Risdon Road and Park Street in New Town, heading toward the city. While crews are scheduled to wrap up nightly shifts by 5:30 am, motorists may encounter residual speed restrictions and partial lane markings. A 15-minute buffer is recommended for those traveling from the northern suburbs into the CBD before 7:00 am.

In Moonah, Springfield Avenue is also subject to nightly maintenance. Works are scheduled to conclude at 4:00 am daily, but commuters should remain alert for heavy machinery or traffic management signage that may still be in the process of being cleared during the early hours.

Key Road Closures and Detours

  • Queens Walk, New Town: A full closure is in place between Gas Road and Selfs Point Road. This closure is active from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm for essential road works and is expected to continue through the end of the week.
  • McVilly Drive, Queens Domain: This route remains closed to vehicular traffic between Davies Avenue and the Tasman Highway interchange. The closure is required for the installation of a sewer main and is scheduled to remain in effect until late March.
  • CBD Intersection Works: Nightly infrastructure upgrades are occurring at the intersections of Liverpool and Murray Streets, as well as Collins and Murray Streets. These works run from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am. While the road should be open for the morning commute, early risers may find temporary plates or uneven surfaces at these junctions.

Public Transport and Metro Alerts

Metro Tasmania has confirmed that services are generally running to their scheduled timetables, though several urban routes are subject to detours. Specifically, bus services passing through New Town and the Queens Domain area are following established diversion plans due to the closures on Queens Walk and McVilly Drive. Passengers are encouraged to check the latest network updates on the Metro Tasmania app before heading to their stops, as temporary stop closures may be in effect near the CBD construction sites.
