City of Hobart Public Notice: Scheduled Works and Health Advisories

City of Hobart authorities have issued several updates for Tuesday, 7 April 2026, regarding essential infrastructure improvements and public health initiatives. Residents and commuters are advised to review the following notices to ensure minimal disruption to their daily routines and to participate in ongoing community consultations.

Night-Time Roadworks in Hobart CBD

Motorists are advised that significant night-time roadworks are currently active at the intersection of Murray Street with both Liverpool and Collins streets. These works, which are nearing completion on April 8, are conducted between 6:00 pm and 5:00 am. The project involves the installation of new kerbs, paving, and line-marking to facilitate the implementation of "scramble crossings." These three-phase crossings are designed to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists by providing a dedicated phase for all foot traffic. While lane closures are in effect during work hours, footpaths will remain open for pedestrian use.

Additionally, night works continue on Elizabeth Street between Macquarie and Davey streets. This project involves road resurfacing and the widening of footpaths to improve safety and accessibility for bus commuters during peak hours. Significant travel delays should be anticipated in the central business district during evening and early morning hours; motorists are encouraged to seek alternative routes where possible.

Major Road Closures and Infrastructure Projects

Several major thoroughfares and public spaces in the greater Hobart area remain subject to closure or significant restrictions on April 7:

  • McVilly Drive: The section between Davies Avenue and the Tasman Highway interchange remains closed to facilitate the installation of a new sewer main. This closure, which impacts the Intercity Cycleway, is expected to remain in place until Friday, 10 April. Cyclists and pedestrians are directed to use the Bridge of Remembrance to cross the highway.
  • Rosny Esplanade: In the Rosny area, sections of the esplanade between Kellatie Road and Ninda Street remain closed 24/7 as part of a long-term reconstruction project. Public transport users should note that bus stops in this vicinity are temporarily out of service.
  • Catherine Street Reserve: Stormwater restoration works are currently active. The reserve is closed to pedestrians to ensure public safety during the mitigation of soil erosion and the installation of new infrastructure.

Public Health and Community Consultation

The Tasmanian Department of Health has issued the following reminders for the Hobart community:

  • Mental Health Strategy: Public consultation for the "Rethink and Beyond" Mental Health Strategy remains open. Residents are encouraged to provide feedback on the future of mental health services in Tasmania through the official submission portal until May 1.
  • RAT Availability: Service Tasmania centers continue to provide free COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) through the current month. However, residents are advised that this free service is scheduled to cease after 30 April 2026.
  • Poimena Reserve: Construction continues on the new public toilet facility at Poimena Reserve in Austins Ferry. While temporary fencing is in place, the project is on track for its scheduled completion in June.

The City of Hobart thanks residents for their patience as these essential infrastructure and health projects are delivered.
