New Health Legislation: Interstate Prescriptions Now Accepted

The City of Hobart wishes to inform residents of the commencement of the Poisons Amendment (Interstate Prescriptions) Act 2025, which officially came into effect this week. This landmark reform removes significant barriers for patients who receive medical care across state lines. Tasmanian pharmacists are now authorized to dispense most medications prescribed by interstate doctors, including treatments for ADHD, opioids, and anxiety medications. Health Minister Bridget Archer noted that this change simplifies the process for both residents returning from interstate consultations and visitors requiring essential medicine while in Tasmania. Detailed information for patients and prescribers is now available via the Department of Health.

Public Health Consultation: Tobacco and Vaping Bill

The Tasmanian Department of Health has opened the public consultation period for the Public Health Amendment (Prohibited Tobacco and Other Products) Bill 2026. This proposed legislation aims to address the rising trade of illicit tobacco and nicotine products across the state, including nicotine pouches and e-cigarettes. Community members, business owners, and health advocates are encouraged to review the draft Bill and provide feedback on the proposed changes to the Public Health Act 1997. Submissions will remain open until March 6, 2026, and can be submitted via email to the Department of Health.
