In accordance with the 2026 Easter holiday schedule, the City of Hobart and various Tasmanian Government agencies have announced changes to standard operations for the long weekend. Today, Friday, 3 April 2026 (Good Friday), marks the beginning of the holiday period. Residents should take note of the following service adjustments:
- Council Offices: The Hobart Council Centre and all administrative offices are closed today and will remain closed through Tuesday, 7 April. Standard business hours will resume on Wednesday, 8 April.
- School Holidays: All government schools in Hobart have commenced their Easter break as of today. Classes are scheduled to resume for students on Wednesday, 8 April 2026.
- Emergency Services: While administrative offices are closed, the City's emergency after-hours contact line remains active for urgent infrastructure or public safety matters.
Infrastructure Notice: Collins Street Road Works
The City of Hobart continues the second stage of the Collins Street Streetscape Improvement Trial. This project is part of a broader effort to create a more welcoming and safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists in the city center. To minimize traffic impact during the Easter break, motorists are advised of ongoing nightly closures:
- Location: Collins Street, specifically the segment between Victoria Street and Murray Street.
- Timing: Periodic closures are in effect from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.
- Duration: These nightly works are scheduled to continue until Thursday, 9 April 2026.
Signage and traffic management will be in place. Commuters are encouraged to utilize alternative routes through the CBD during these hours.
Public Health Advisories and Community Consultation
The Tasmanian Department of Health is currently highlighting several public health initiatives and active consultation periods:
- Mental Health Strategy: The public consultation for the Tasmanian Mental Health Strategy, titled Rethink and Beyond, is currently open. The government is seeking community input to shape future mental health services. Submissions are being accepted through Friday, 1 May 2026.
- Rapid Antigen Test Availability: Notice is provided that the distribution of free COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) at Service Tasmania centres is nearing its conclusion. The program will officially end on 30 April 2026. Residents are encouraged to visit their local centres for available kits prior to this date.
Parks and Development Planning
The removal of two giant sequoia trees in St David's Park is proceeding this month. After extensive attempts to save the trees, they were determined to be beyond recovery and will be removed to ensure public safety. Visitors to the park are asked to follow all directional signage around the work site.
Additionally, multiple planning permit applications are currently open for public representation. Details regarding these proposed developments can be viewed at the Hobart Council Centre or online. The deadline for formal representations regarding current applications is 11:59 pm on Monday, 13 April 2026.
