Public Notice: Hobart City Council Easter Service Updates and Essential Works

Official Notice: Easter 2026 Service Adjustments
As the City of Hobart prepares for the Easter long weekend, residents and visitors are advised of several changes to municipal services and facility operations effective Thursday, 2 April 2026. Council administrative offices will conclude business at 5:15 PM this afternoon and will remain closed through the Easter break, reopening on Wednesday, 8 April. For urgent matters during this period, the after-hours emergency call centre remains available 24 hours a day.
Waste and Recycling Schedules
While many services will pause for the holiday, the City of Hobart confirms that residential bin collections—including garbage, recycling, and FOGO—will operate on their normal schedule. This includes collections typically falling on Good Friday. Residents are reminded to place their wheelie bins on the kerbside before 5:30 AM on their scheduled day. However, please note that the McRobies Gully Waste Management Centre (The Tip) will be closed to the public on Friday, 3 April. Normal operating hours at the facility will resume following the Good Friday holiday.
Facility Closures and Infrastructure Upgrades
A significant closure is in effect for the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre. The facility is closed starting today, Thursday, 2 April, to undergo essential infrastructure upgrades. These works are scheduled to continue through the holiday period, with the centre expected to reopen at 5:30 AM on Thursday, 9 April. Additionally, city car parks including Argyle Street, Centrepoint, and Hobart Central will have varying hours over the weekend, with all three major lots closed on Good Friday.
Roadworks and Traffic Advisories
Motorists should be aware of ongoing night works at the intersection of Liverpool Street and Murray Street. These works, which include road resurfacing and infrastructure maintenance, are conducted between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM and are expected to continue through 9 April. Furthermore, McVilly Drive at the Queens Domain remains closed between Davies Avenue and the Tasman Highway interchange for the installation of a new sewer main. This closure is scheduled to remain in place until Friday, 10 April. Commuters are encouraged to plan alternative routes and follow all posted detour signage.
Public Health and Biosecurity Alerts
The Tasmanian Department of Health has issued its latest respiratory infection activity report. As of early April, activity levels for COVID-19, influenza, and RSV remain low across the state. However, health officials continue to urge eligible residents to stay up to date with seasonal vaccinations. In biosecurity news, the high-risk season for the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug continues through the end of April. Residents are asked to remain vigilant in backyard gardens and report any sightings of unusual pests to the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline.
Council Strategic Endorsements
Following the most recent Council meeting, the City of Hobart has officially adopted the Open Space Strategy 2026-36. This decade-long framework aims to enhance the city’s parks, sensory gardens, and travel corridors. The Council also confirmed a new three-year partnership agreement to support the Dark Mofo festival through 2028, ensuring the continued delivery of the Winter Feast and other cultural events that define Hobart’s winter season.
