Sunday Traffic and Commute Update: Major Roadworks Commencing

Commuters and residents in the Greater Hobart area should prepare for significant changes to road conditions starting this evening, Sunday, 22 March 2026. While daytime traffic is expected to remain relatively light, a series of major resurfacing and maintenance projects are scheduled to begin late this afternoon and tonight, affecting key arteries including the Brooker Highway and the Hobart CBD.

Brooker Highway Resurfacing and Night Works

The Department of State Growth has announced essential resurfacing and line marking works on the Brooker Highway, specifically the section between Risdon Road and Park Street in New Town, heading towards Hobart. These works are scheduled to commence tonight, Sunday, 22 March, and will run nightly through to Friday, 27 March.

  • Working Hours: 7:30 pm to 5:30 am nightly.
  • Impact: Partial lane closures and a significantly reduced speed limit will be in place during these hours.
  • Commuter Advice: Motorists heading into the city from the northern suburbs should allow at least 15 minutes of additional travel time. Please follow the directions of traffic controllers and obey all temporary signage to ensure the safety of road crews.

Evening Disruptions in Moonah and Hobart CBD

In addition to the highway works, local councils have confirmed several infrastructure projects beginning or continuing tonight:

  • Springfield Avenue, Moonah: Glenorchy City Council will begin night road works as part of a scheduled road resealing program. Disruption is expected from 4:00 pm today until 4:00 am Monday. Expect increased truck movements and minor delays.
  • Liverpool and Murray Street Intersection: Ongoing night works continue at this major intersection this evening. Restrictions will be in place from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.
  • Queens Walk, New Town: Major road works between Gas Road and Selfs Point Road are ongoing. While the most intensive activity occurs during the day, road users should remain cautious of changed surfaces near the Cornelian Bay area.

Regional and Southern Corridor Updates

For those travelling from the south, the Huon Highway strengthening project is nearing its late-March completion. Commuters should expect lane closures and speed restrictions near Leslie Road (Leslie Vale) and between Summerleas Road and the Southern Outlet in Kingston. These measures are active 24/7 to facilitate the final stages of road repairs.

In the Derwent Valley, Boyer Road near New Norfolk remains reduced to a single lane at Derbyshire Cliffs due to land stability works. While traffic controllers will be on-site to manage flow, Sunday delays are expected to be shorter than regular weekday peak periods.

Public Transport and Metro Alerts

Metro Tasmania has confirmed that Sunday services are currently running according to the standard weekend timetable. However, passengers should be mindful that the Brooker Highway night works starting at 7:30 pm and the CBD intersection work may cause minor detours for late-evening bus routes. Passengers are encouraged to check real-time updates via the Metro Trip Planner before travelling late tonight. Regular Sunday services to the Hobart Domain and Sandy Bay for local events are unaffected.

Drive safely and plan your journey ahead of the Monday morning return to work.
