Significant Disruptions for Hobart Motorists this Sunday

Commuters and residents in Hobart should prepare for a morning of significant travel disruptions today, Sunday, 15 February 2026. The 17th edition of the 'Run The Bridge' fun run is the primary cause of major artery closures, most notably impacting the Tasman Bridge. Motorists are advised to plan their journeys well in advance or avoid non-essential travel across the Derwent River during the peak morning hours.

Tasman Bridge and Major Road Closures

The most critical update for Sunday morning is the complete closure of the Tasman Bridge to all vehicular traffic. The bridge is expected to be shut from approximately 6:30 am until 9:00 am to facilitate the safe passage of thousands of event participants. During this window, only emergency vehicles will be permitted crossing, meaning drivers traveling between the Eastern Shore and the CBD must delay their trips or seek alternative arrangements.

Beyond the bridge, several key local roads are also facing closures or significant restrictions:

  • Federal Street: Closed between Elizabeth Street and Argyle Street in North Hobart from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm for a scheduled community event.
  • Queens Walk: Closed between Gas Road and Selfs Point Road from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm for ongoing road maintenance.
  • Elizabeth Street: Night works continue in North Hobart between Elphinstone Road and Rupert Avenue. While the road is primarily affected between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am, equipment and signage may impact early morning visibility.
  • Rosny Esplanade: Sectional 24/7 closures remain in place between Kellatie Road and Ninda Street as part of long-term road upgrades.

Public Transport and Airport Services

Metro Tasmania has issued service alerts for several Hobart routes today. Many CBD-bound buses will be diverted during the 'Run The Bridge' event, and several stops on the city fringe will be temporarily decommissioned until the race concludes. Commuters should check the Metro Tas app for real-time tracking of diverted services.

Travelers heading to Hobart Airport via the SkyBus Express should allow at least an extra 20 to 30 minutes for their journey. The SkyBus will be unable to service Stop 2 (Brooke Street Pier) and Stop 3 (Visitor Information Centre) between 6:00 am and 9:40 am. Passengers are encouraged to use Stop 1 at the Grand Chancellor Hotel on Campbell Street during this time.

Advice for Commuters

Traffic is expected to return to normal Sunday levels by midday, though the North Hobart area may remain congested into the evening due to the Federal Street closure. If you must travel this morning, the Southern Outlet and Brooker Highway remain the best options for north-south movement, provided you do not need to cross the river.
